Pocahontas State Park

Summer is the perfect time for a camping trip, and our real estate agents can think of no better place in the Richmond area than Pocahontas State Park. Spanning 7,919 acres, it's one of Virginia's largest state parks and offers an amazing range of recreational facilities.

Pocahontas State Park is just a short drive from many Richmond homes for sale. The park offers a little something for everyone, and it's a perfect place to experience the outdoors in Central Virginia.

Pocahontas State Park Campground

Pocahontas State Park offers a variety of overnight accommodations, including campgrounds and cabins. Over 100 campsites are available, each of which includes a picnic table, campfire grill, and lantern holder.

Sites are open to both tents and RVs and include water and 20 and 30-amp electrical hookups (select sites also offer 50-amp hookups). The layout of the campground allows for privacy at most sites, and the campground as a whole is shady and secluded, with a thick canopy of trees.

Additional accommodations include a six-bedroom lodge, modern three-bedroom cabins, rustic camp cabins, and several yurts, which are intermediate between a tent and a cabin. Amenities vary among each type of lodging.

Campsites at Pocahontas State Park are available by reservation through the Virginia State Parks online reservation portal. Sites may also be available on a first-come, first-served basis, but advance reservations are recommended, especially on busy summer weekends, when the park tends to fill up.

Things to Do in Pocahontas State Park

If you are camping at Pocahontas State Park, you have access to a wide range of recreational facilities at no additional charge. The park is located along the banks of Swift Creek and Swift Creek Lake and includes many acres of lush woodlands crisscrossed by trails. Popular activities include:

  • Hiking and Biking: Pocahontas State Park includes more than 90 miles of marked trails, which crisscross a beautiful landscape of wooded hills and valleys. About 10 miles of these trails are restricted to foot traffic only, while 44 miles are designed for mountain biking. Trails in the park also offer great opportunities for bird watching and spotting native wildflowers. Check out this trail guide and map to learn more!

  • Boating: Boat launch facilities in Pocahontas State Park offer access to 156-acre Swift Creek Lake. Gas-powered boats are prohibited, but electric motors and all non-powered craft are allowed. Canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, and stand-up paddle boards are available for rent in the park. The main lake and many areas of the Swift Creek stream are perfect for kayaking.

  • Fishing: Anglers commonly catch largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, and bluegill in Swift Creek Lake. The park offers ample bank fishing access as well as opportunities to fish by boat.

  • Swimming: Although there is not a designated beach on Swift Creek Lake, Pocahontas State Park does have an Aquatic Recreation Center, which includes water slides, splash pads, and several pools at various depths for different age and experience levels. Swimming is available from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

  • CCC Museum: Pocahontas State Park is home to the CCC Museum, which documents the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Virginia through a fascinating collection of photographs, artifacts, and exhibits. The museum is housed in a building that was originally built by the CCC.
