Petersburg VA Pamplin Historical Park

Take a Journey in Time at Pamplin Historical Park

Before you start thinking about back to school shopping, pumpkin-flavored everything and sweater weather, round up the family and enjoy a day of fun and learning at Pamplin Historical Park. Explore the historical battleground as you take a trip back in time to experience life during the Civil War era. The entire family will enjoy at the park. As you're touring Petersburg homes for sale, a trip to Pamplin Historical Park will stand out as a great reason to call our area home.

Preserving the Past

To preserve and protect this site which holds such historical significance, Dr. Robert B. Pamplin, Jr. purchased the property in 1991 upon being made aware that it was available. Aside from having ancestral ties to the grounds from the Civil War, Dr. Pamplin saw the purchase as an opportunity to educate current and future generations about the importance of this particular part of Civil War history and the realities of daily life during this era. Central to the park's features is the stretch of land where the Union Army, under the command of General Ulysses S. Grant breached the Confederate defensive line, led by General Robert E. Lee. This end to the struggle for Petersburg initiated events that would end in General Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse soon after. Pamplin Historical Park also showcases museums, walking trails and antebellum homes on its 424-acre spread.

Discover History With the Whole Family

Part of what makes Pamplin Historical Park unique is its mission to show visitors more than just a battleground and a few artifacts. The park presents a perspective that includes the history of the events that occurred here as it seen through the eyes of soldiers, officers, civilians and even slaves. Your journey back in time begins at The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier that houses informative exhibits including one that's interactive and lets you walk through the war experience of one of thirteen soldiers. The restored Tudor Hall Plantation gives guests a glimpse of how a Confederate general lived. Antiques and furnishings from the era are on display. Learn what it was like to be a slave during the Civil war as you tour The Field Quarter, and watch actors in costume demonstrate the daily activities of soldiers at the Military Encampment. One of the highlights of the Battlefield Center museum is the "Breaking the Backbone of the Rebellion" exhibit, featuring a surround sound theater experience and battle map lit with fiber optics that the kids will love.

Plan Your Visit

You can visit Pamplin Historical Park any day from 9 am to 5 pm between March and November. The park offers special events regularly and hosts a Civil War Adventure Camp. Don't miss out on The Civil War Store while you're there and take home some souvenirs.
